During the construction of the building, we need to design the staircase for the multistorey buildings. In this case, we are designing a dog-legged staircase design for a residential building.
For residential building, there is a dimension guideline:
1. Height of Rise = 150mm to 170mm.
2. Width of tread = 220mm to 270mm.
3. Width of stair = 0.8m to 1 m
Based on the above standard dimension guideline. We will design a staircase to have the following space.
We need the following data given:
The floor height of the staircase = 3.3m
Size of staircase = 2.2m x 5m
Type of building = Residential
Numerical Process For Dog-legged Staircase design for residential building
Step 1: Assuming that the type of staircase = Dog-legged
Step 2: Assume width of staircase = 1m
Step 3: Assume width of landing = 1m (at least equal to the width of the staircase)
Step 4: Height of one flight = 3300/2 = 1650mm
Step 5: height of riser (R)= 150mm (As per the standard guideline of dimension)
Step 6: No of rise in a flight = 1650/150= 11nos.
Step 7: Nos. of tread in a flight = nos. of rise in a flight- 1 = 11-1= 10 nos.
Step 8: Width of tread (T)= 600-2R = 600-2 x 150 = 300mm
Step 9: Length of stair= tread x nos. of tread in a flight + width of landing
= (300×10+1000) mm = 4000mm
Step 10: Entry space (space available for passage) = 5000 – 4000 = 1000mm
Data illustration
- Type of building = residential
- Type of staircase = doglegged
- Width of staircase = 1 m
- Height of rise = 150mm
- Total no of rise = 11 x 2 = 22
- Width of tread = 300 mm
- Total no of tread = 300 mm
- Entry space = 1 m
